1. The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism through the Department of Fisheries in
collaboration with the National Standards Centre (NSC), Ministry of Finance and Economy,
held a Socialization Event for PBD 45:2023 on Brunei Standard For Shrimp Paste on 5 March
2024 at Dewan Setia Pahlawan, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
2. The socialization event aimed at introducing the Piawai Brunei Darussalam under PBD
45:2023 – Brunei Standard For Shrimp Paste (Produk Belacan) and this standard was
developed to provide guidance in the production of shrimp paste products, understanding in
depth the definition of shrimp paste products, the main composition of raw materials,
product quality criteria and safe manufacturing methods prioritising cleanliness, to ensure
the products are safe and fit for human consumption.
3. In attendance as Guest of Honour was Yang Mulia Awang Haji Mohammad Yusree bin Haji
Junaidi, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism and also
present were Yang Mulia Awang Mohammad Harris bin Brigadier General (Rtd) Dato Paduka
Haji Ibrahim, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Trade and Industry), Ministry of Finance and
Economy, Yang Mulia Awang Allen On Hsien Yung, Director of the Industry and Business
Ecosystem Division, Ministry of Finance and Economy, in his capacity as Acting Director for
National Standard Centre and Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Wanidawati binti Haji Tamat, Acting
Director of the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
4. The event started with a welcoming remark by Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Wanidawati binti
Haji Tamat, Acting Director of the Department of Fisheries. She reiterated the role of the
Department of Fisheries in providing a common understanding on the scope of the standard,
product, description, essential composition, quality factors, food additives, hygiene and
handling, labeling requirements, method of sampling, examination and analyses. PBD
45:2023 shall serve as a general reference for the local food entrepreneurs and all relevant
stakeholders including importers, exporters, academic researchers, policy makers and also
general public involved in various aspects of the food supply chain.
5. The socialization event was attended by stakeholders of various government agencies, higher
education institutions and small-scale seafood processing companies. The socialization event
concluded with a showcase of the published PBD 45:2023 with an aspiration to realize the
initiatives by Department of Fisheries and National Standards Centre.
