04.05.2017_SIGNING CEREMONY AT SG PENYATANG SHRIMP CULTURE SITE

The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism and Golden Corporation SdnBhd today signed a Land Lease Agreement to develop farms for the cultivation of Blue Shrimps at Penyatang, Tutong.  Golden Corporation will invest an estimated amount of $30 million to develop this 200 hectares site to support the MPRT's 5 Year Strategic Plan of increasing aquaculture output for export markets.      

 

This project will see an additional production of at least 2,500 tons of Blue Shrimp, which will make Brunei Darussalam the largest producer of Rostris Blue shrimp in the world.  For Golden Corporation, this is another key milestone that will deepen its commitment to Brunei Darussalam and provide shrimps as raw materials for its processing plants which will then be exported overseas.   

 

Golden Corporation has invested more than $40 million in Brunei Darussalam and its investment covers the whole value chain of aquaculture that ranges from Fishing Vessels, Feedmill, Hatchery, Grow-out ponds to Processing and Value-added Processing Plants.  Currently, Golden Corporation provided more than 120 jobs to locals and it expects to provide an additional 80 jobs for locals with the implementation of its expansion plans.  The company will also invest into Research on RostrisBroodstock Development which will make Brunei Darussalam the Centre of Excellence for this species of shrimp.  This research will be conducted in collaboration with Taiwan Agricultural Technology Research Institute,Taiwan National Ocean University and a local university.

 

The Guest of Honour for this signing ceremony is Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism.  In his speech, the Minister highlighted that this project will be one of a major achievement for Brunei Darussalam as it will become the biggest producer of Rostris Blue Shrimp.

 

He also mentioned that this year is the first time that fishery products will be exported to the European Union. Therefore, he emphasised the critical need for all farmers to diligently implement Good Aquaculture Practices in their farms to ensure their products are compliant with the safety and quality standards, and therefore acceptable to the importing countries. He also emphasised that farmers must also consider the adoption ofinnovative farming techniques that will raise their productivity and therefore help stimulate growth and secure long term continuity of their business.

 

Through this, the fishery sector is well poised to support the diversification and growth of the economy.

 

Together with the signing of this land lease agreement, Golden Corporation also signed 2 separate Memorandum of Understanding with its marketing partners, Unima Distribution SAS for exports to EU and Aquastar Pty for exports to Australia.  These exports are expected to exceed $25 million per year and it has been made possible through Fishery Department's efforts in clearing the regulatory channels for both markets.
