Thank you for visiting us and first and foremost I would like to welcome you to the
homepage of the Department of Fisheries, Brunei Darussalam.
This homepage of ours is developed with the intention of providing you with as much
information as possible about fisheries in Brunei Darussalam. It is meant for information
sharing with those having interest in the industry. I stress, information sharing, and
therefore, we hope it is going to be an interactive one.
The fisheries potentials of Brunei Darussalam are estimated to be sustainably worth at
least B$200 million per year. In support to the continuing effort of the Government of
Brunei Darussalam in diversifying the economy of the country to other industries from the
oil and gas, the mission of the Fisheries Department is "Realizing the Sustainable
Maximum Economic Level of Fisheries Production".
Mindful of the finite nature of the resources, however, technically, we strictly adhere to
the very concept of the 'maximum economic yield (M.E.Y.) level of development. In capture
fisheries, we are quite conservative in that we calculated the number of vessels that can
sustainably exploit the resources up to the M.E.Y. level, that is, after doing the
resources survey before offering the licences; in aquaculture, we only allow development
in areas identified by us which incorporate, where necessary, mangrove buffer-zones,
bioponds, etc.
Being a newcomer, commercial fisheries development only really started in Brunei
Darussalam in the early 1980s, we, therefore, have the opportunities to learn a lot from
the experiences of other countries especially our neighbours. At the same time, we are
fortunate to have a stable economy from other resources. We are, therefore, not being
socially or politically pressed for immediate, fast and unplanned development of our
fisheries resources. As such, therefore, as you may be able to find out as you browse
along, there are still available and viable opportunities in the fisheries industry in
Brunei Darussalam.
I am sure you will be quite informed about fisheries in Brunei Darussalam by the time you
leave us, however, at the same time, please do not hesitate to request for more
information if you feel necessary. We, of course, will update and improve our homepage
from time to time and make sure that you will also continue to visit us from time to time.
