Main Functions
Responsible for assisting Corporate
Planning Body (CPB) in developing Strategic Plans to achieve the
department's mission to produce a sustainable fisheries production at
"Maximum Economic Yield" of $200 million per year. These
includes monitoring and coordinating the implementation of National
Development Plan projects and activities under Programme and Focus which
will enable the Department to achieve its mission.
Other responsibility are monitoring
and coordinating the department involvement / participation in the
International Organisation, such as SEAFDEC in which the department has
been a member since 1994, ASWGFi, APEC-FWG, APEC-MRC, WTO, AFTA and etc.
Strategic Development Section also
responsible for producing the Department's annual report for the Ministry
of Industry and Primary Resources.
National Development Plan
The chart below shows the budget allocation for projects under the Fifth (1985-1990),
Sixth (1991-1995), Seventh (1996-2000) and Eighth (2001-2005) National Development Plans (NDP).
The Fifth NDP focuses on the identification of an integrated development of the fisheries
resources and its potentials which are estimated to be worth about $200 million through
5-point Plan uplifting of the fisheries industry. The development will encompass the
following sectors :-
1. Capture;
2. Culture;
3. Processing;
4. Marketing; and
5. Support Services.
The Sixth NDP then focus on the award to the successful applicants for capture and
culture industries and preparation of infrastructure for identified areas for culture and
processing. Building of infrastructure such as hatcheries and grow-out for culture and
berthing facilities for capture and cold storage and distribution centre for processing.
The Seventh NDP focus on developments of capture industry and processing industry,
opening new areas and; research and development on new potential species for culture
industry.
The Eighth NDP focus on further
developments of fisheries industry such as exploitation of deep sea Zone 4
for tuna long-line and tuna purse-seining, promoting new technology in
environmental friendly aquaculture and establishment of more downstream
processing industries.
