Main Functions
-
Conduct marine resources research, evaluation, monitoring and
management
-
Assess the status and biodiversity of the marine
fisheries resources including
:-
-
Pelagic fisheries resources including tuna and
tuna-like resources;
-
Demersal
fisheries resources;
-
Shrimp
resources and other crustaceans;
-
Squid
resources and other molluscs.
-
Identify potential fisheries resources such as deep water shrimps,
large pelagic and other fishes;
-
Assess fisheries potential and biodiversity of
critical habitats such as coral reef areas and the impact of fishing;
-
Evaluate the water quality and the overall health of
the marine environment
:-
-
Physical parameters of the marine waters;
-
Chemical parameters of the marine environment;
-
Biological parameters including Plankton
assessment.
-
Monitor and manage the level of exploitation and the
reduction of negative impact of fishing gears on the resources
:-
-
Determine the efficiency of fishing gears and mesh
selectivity;
-
Evaluate the impact of moratorium among trawlers in
zones 2 and 3;
-
Evaluate the impact of moratorium among small-scale
fisheries in zone 1;
-
Assess the impact of using 51-mm cod end mesh size
regulation among trawlers;
-
Assess the impact of using FADs and artificial reefs;
-
Assess the impact on the use of luring lights in
fishing.
-
Conduct socio-economic study on the capture fisheries
both commercial and small-scale fisheries.
-
Implement collaborative R&D with local and international
institutions
:-
-
Collaborate with SEAFDEC on marine resource
assessment with emphasis on offshore pelagic resources;
-
Collaborate with WFC on trawl database and
socio-economic studies on capture fisheries.
-
Identify, develop and transfer of new technology in capture fisheries :-
-
Conduct training and demonstration on the use of reel
drum in longline fishing;
-
Study the impact of TED and JTED on trawl fishing;
-
Study the effective use of automatic squid jigging
machines for oceanic squids.
-
Effective operation, supervision and management of research facilities :-
-
Operation and management of research vessel, KP
Tenggiri;
-
Operation and management of multi-purpose speed boat,
Tangat;
-
Proper management and maintenance of research
equipment such as hydroacousti system, ICTD and diving equipment.
-
Training and dissemination of information regarding
marine fisheries, capture fisheries technologies, fishing techniques and
fisheries resources management
:-
-
Seamanship and navigation for local fishermen;
-
Modern fishing technology and fishing methods geared
towards responsible fishing;
-
Stakeholders consultation on fisheries management.
