SPORTFISHING ACTIVITIES  

Eco-Tourism in fisheries sector is one of the fisheries activities identified that can contribute to about $27 million per year to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP).  In order to support the Eco-Tourism industry, the Department of Fisheries has embarked several projects within the 8th RKN namely the Marine parks, Turtle Management and Conservation and the Deployment of the Artifical Reefs in Brunei Waters.

Sport fishing activities is one of the promoted activities under the Marine Parks which is very popular among the Bruneians in the country. There are many interesting locations within Brunei waters where visitors can relax and fishing. In this regards, the Department of Fisheries has embarked on the artifical reefs projects, where 80 stations of Artifical Reefs will be deployed in Brunei Waters under the 8th RKN.  This project is now about 40% complete and can be used as a sport fishing locations.

In Brunei Darussalam, fishing activities must be licensed under the Fisheries Acts, chapter 61. In this regards, for sport fishing enthusiasm, a fee of $3.00 per licensed will be charged and it is valid for 3 days. There are also allowed to bring home 5 pieces of fish with minimum size allowed according to the fish species concerned. The size list of the fish concerned will be given during the issuing of the license. Any fish caught below the size allowed must be released back to the sea.

The Department of Fisheries will also required all licensed sport fishers to fill in the information form which must be returned to the department before new license can be issued. It is an offence under the Fisheries Acts, chapter 61 for those fishers who do not comply with the sport fishing rules and regulations and if found guilty will be fined up to $2,500 or 1 month imprisonment.
