RED TIDE ANNOUNCEMENT RELEASED ON

COMMUNICATION OF
THE DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES
MINISTRY OF INDUSTRY AND PRIMARY RESOURCES

OCCURRENCE OF RED TIDE IN WATERS OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

COMMUNICATION BY THE  DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES, MINISTRY OF INDUSTRY AND PRIMARY RESOURCES STATES THAT :

THE CONTINOUS MONITORING CARRIED OUT BY THE DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES STILL INDICATED THE PRESENCE OF RED TIDE ORGANISMS IN THE WATERS OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM. AFFECTED AREAS ARE WATERS OFF PELONG, PELUMPONG TO JERUDONG, UJUNG SAPUH, PULAU BEDUKANG AND THE AREAS CLOSE TO THE BRUNEI CHANNEL WITHIN THE INNER BAY AREAS OF BRUNEI RIVER.

AS USUAL, AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE, THE DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES REITERATE THAT BEFORE CONSUMING LARGE AND SMALL SIZED FISH, THE GILLS, GUTS AND OTHER INTERNAL ORGANS SHOULD BE COMPLETELY REMOVED AND THOROUGHLY CLEANED BEFORE COOKING.

THE PUBLIC IS ALSO ADVISED TO ABSTAIN FROM EATING SMALL FISHES OF WHICH THEIR GILLS, STOMACH AND INTERNAL ORGANS CANNOT BE REMOVED, AND ALSO MOLLUSCAN SHELLFISH FROM THE AFFECTED AREAS OR OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN.

HOWEVER, OTHER FISHES SUCH AS TENGGIRI, GROUPER, RED SNAPPER (BARAH-BARAHAN, UNGAH, SANTAK, MAMBANGAN AND THE LIKE), SEABASS, IKAN PUTEH OR TREVALLIES (LANGURAN, MANUKUK, BAMASA, KALAKITOK AND THE LIKE), TANGAT, KEROSI, MELAWARI, KURAU, TONGKOL, BAKULAN, BAKALANG, UMPAK, JARANG GIGI, GELAMA, SUMBILANG, SQUID, CRAB AND SHRIMP ARE SAFE FOR CONSUMPTION ONLY IF THE GILL, STOMACH AND INTERNAL ORGANS OF THESE FISHES ARE REMOVED AND THOROUGHLY CLEANED BEFORE COOKING.

THE PUBLIC, ESPECIALLY FISHERMEN, IS BANNED FROM CATCHING AND HARVESTING OF FISH FROM AFFECTED AREAS.

THE DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES WOULD LIKE TO ASSURE THE PUBLIC NOT TO BE ALARMED AS THE RED TIDE MONITORING ACTIVITIES ARE CONTINUOUSLY BEING CARRIED OUT.

THE DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES WILL KEEP THE PUBLIC INFORMED OF THE CURRENT SITUATION FROM TIME TO TIME. THE PUBLIC, ESPECIALLY THE FISHERMEN, CAN ASSIST THE DEPARTMENT IN REPORTING ANY WATER DISCOLOURATION AND TO REPORT ANY MASS FISH MORTALITIES IN OUR WATERS OR BEACHES AT THE FOLLOWING TELEPHONE NUMBERS 8819218, 8769730, 8786399  AND 8887480.
