Aplenty to Attract Visitors to
Fisheries Carnival
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - The
Fisheries Department is once again organising the Fisheries Carnival
2006 from September l - 3 at the Fish Landing Complex in Serasa, Muara.
According to Fisheries
Carnival 2006 Promotion & Publicity Committee Secretariat Assistant
Head, Dayang Desimawati Haji Metali, the three-day carnival is part of
continuous efforts by the Fisheries Department to promote the sale of
produces of entrepreneurs in the fisheries industry.
The carnival is a way to
encourage the fisheries ecotourism industry in the country, she added.
This is the fifth of such
event held since 2001. The carnival draws the participation of local
entrepreneurs in the capture industry, seafood processing industry,
aquaculture industry and other industries.
The carnival will this year
highlight the opportunities that can be reaped in the fisheries
industry, services offered to entrepreneurs, food safety issues, the
involvement of other industries - such as the Ministry of Health, the
Accreditation Centre, banks - and the participation of students in the
Young Scientist Badge Award Scheme Fisheries 2006 Project, she said.
The objectives are to
promote fisheries products, activities and achievements of local
entrepreneurs.
It also aims to educate the
public on the fishing technologies, gears and machineries, while
simultaneously offering local entrepreneurs a chance to promote and sell
their products.
The carnival will be
launched by Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Dato Seri
Setia Dr Haji Awang Ahmad bin Haji Jumat, while the closing will be
officiated by Director of Fisheries, Dayang Hajah Hasnah binti Ibrahim.
Numerous activities have
been planned for the three-day carnival. Among them is the setting up of
a seafood corner, where visitors can savour seafood dishes.
During the open day,
visitors can also get onboard and check out the fisheries research
vessel and the surveillance vessels.
There will also be a Global
Positioning System (GPS) clinic allowing commercial and private
entrepreneurs a chance to pose GPS-related questions to a specialist.
Other activities will be
held for both children and adults. No entrance fee will be charged.
