Fisheries Fest Nets Big Crowds

MUARA, 1 September 2006, Friday - The Fisheries Carnival kicked off yesterday with large crowds converging on the Fish Landing Complex Serasa, Muara to see and participate in many activities as well as buy fresh seafood just unloaded from fishing boats.

The three-day carnival from September 1 - 3 was officially launched by chief guest, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Dr. Haji Awang Ahmad, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources.

Director of Fisheries, Dayang Hajah Hasnah, who's chairperson of the event, said the Fisheries Carnival is an annual project of the Fisheries Department to assist the fisheries industry entrepreneurs to boost the sale of their products. The carnival also promotes fisheries-related activities and helps develop the fisheries eco-tourism sector.

The carnival has been organised yearly by the Fisheries Department since 2001 and attracts the participation of entrepreneurs involved, in the capture industry, seafood processing, aquaculture and other industries that support the progress of the fisheries industry.

Dayang Hajah Hasnah said the carnival also highlighted the investment opportunities in the fisheries industry to potential investors.

She hoped that visitors to the carnival will take the opportunity to gain extra knowledge of the opportunities available in the fisheries industry.

She noted that in 2005, the value of the fisheries industries from the three sectors - capture industry, aquaculture and seafood processing – with the total of $96.87 million.

She said the Fisheries Department is in the process of developing the fisheries eco-tourism sector to upgrade the value of the industry.

Some 51 companies involved in the capture industry, aquaculture and seafood processing are taking part in the carnival. Other participants are from the government and private sector agencies that are showcasing the latest technology in the capture industry, aquaculture and seafood processing and related industries.
