Fisheries Dept Holds Aquaculture Seminar
GADONG, 12 June 2007,
Tuesday - The Department of Fisheries held its fifth aquaculture seminar
for shrimp farmers yesterday at Dewan Taqwa, Civil Service Institute in
Kampong Rimba, Gadong.
With the intention of
improving the productivity of the shrimp farming industry in the
country, the talk is a continuation of a series of seminars being
organised as part of the Fisheries Department's initiative with the
Integrated Aquaculture International.
Present at the seminar were
shrimp and other aquaculture farmers as well as officials and staff of
the Department of Fisheries.
The main objective of the
event was to create awareness among shrimp farmers of the importance of
good aquacultural practices in order to achieve good harvests.
One of the highlights
during the seminar was a presentation of a case study by Regis Bador,
Manager of Sodacal, one of the largest shrimp farms in New Caledonia.
Entitled "Shrimp Culture
Industry Development in New Caledonia", the case study entailed the
experience of New Caledonian farmers in the production of premium shrimp
products called "perfect shrimps". (Brunei and New Caledonia are the
only two countries to produce stylirostris).
Meanwhile, the success of
the seminar was particularly evident in the high level of interaction
among participants and speakers.
The next seminar will be
held next August.
