
3-day International Shrimp Health Workshop Launched
BERAKAS, 13 August 2007,
Monday - The Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Industry and
Primary Resources of Brunei Darussalam and Integrated Aquaculture
International (IAI) of US in collaboration with Universiti Brunei
Darussalam are currently holding a three-day International Shrimp Health
Workshop in Berakas.
The workshop, which was
launched yesterday by Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources
Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah bin Hj Abd Wahab, will end on August 15.
The first day of the
workshop featured lectures on the global status of shrimp diseases and
on molecular and clinical diagnostic techniques such as PCR
amplification of viral DNA and histopathology.
Some of the world's leading
authorities on shrimp diseases are also attending the workshop such as
Dr Donald Lightner and Ms Rita Redman from the University of Arizona in
US, and Dr Leigh Owens from James Cooke University in Australia.
Today, participants will be
visiting the Department of Fisheries, diagnostic, quarantine and
breeding facilities, a local shrimp hatchery and farm, and the
construction site of the proposed Telisai Phase II pond facility, to see
the development of the aquaculture industry in Brunei.
Highlights of the tour will
be the state-of-the-art Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory and the
specific pathogen black tiger shrimp being developed by IAI and
Department of Fisheries.
Tomorrow, participants will
be conducting disease analysis at a laboratory in UBD.
According to the Director
of Fisheries, Hjh Hasnah bte Ibrahim, the workshop aims to improve
understanding of the latest findings and methodologies regarding shrimp
disease diagnosis and management; strengthen local capabilities for
disease detection; exchange information on the latest findings; and,
strengthen networking between local and international farmers and
experts.
Among those who were
present at yesterday's opening ceremony were US Ambassador Mr Emil
Skodon, Dr George Chamberlain, the Co-Chairman of the Organising
Committee, senior government officials, directors and heads of
departments.
Over 80
people are taking part in the workshop, including government officials,
local shrimp operators, students, experts from ASEAN countries, as well
as representatives from China and Iran.
