Lucky Angler Lands Big Prize

MUARA, 19 August 2007, Sunday - Landing a 2.39 kg specimen of a fish locally known as ikan buntal brought good fortune to Awg Janudin bin Hj Junggal of Kg Putat after he was declared the overall winner at a day-long Sport Fishing Competition held at Serasa Beach, Muara yesterday.

For his win, Awg Janudin received B$600, a trophy, a Daiwa Sealine SL 400H, a Capt Fred's Fishing Supply T-shirt, multi-logo short-sleeved shirt, a Daiwa cap and a Fishcomp bag.

Second place went to Mohd Roziman bin Abd Sara of Kg Rimba who caught an ikan umpak weighing 0.92 kg. He won B$300, a trophy, a Daiwa Opus Plus 6000 and fishing T-shirt, a multi-logo shirt, a cap and bag.

Third place went to Ak Yunos bin Pg Hj Damit who landed an ikan buntal weighing 0.74 kg. For his win, he won B$150, a trophy, a Daiwa Opus Plus 5500 and other prizes.

Ten consolation-prize winners each received a medal, a Daiwa Golden Spin 400 reel, a Daiwa Apollo Safari 702MHS rod, a Seahawk Proline 25lb line 603M, a Capt Fred's Fishing Supply T-shirt, a Seahawk T-shirt, a cap and Fishcomp bag.

The prizes were presented by the chief guest, Pengiran Hajah Mariana binti PDNLDR Pengiran Haji Abdul Momin, who is the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.

A total of 137 participants took part in the event, which was organised by the Fisheries Department, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources and Dalplus Technologies. The competition was for onshore (beach) fishing using rod and reel only.

The objective of the competition was to promote eco-tourism activities through fishing in Brunei Darussalam, and to gain more revenue through the eco-tourism sector.

The Fisheries Department event was held following encouraging response from local fishing enthusiasts to Sport Fishing competitions which were organised in 2001 in conjunction with Visit Brunei Year 2001, in 2003 in Belait district, in 2004 in Temburong district and in 2006 in Tutong district.

The event has the potential to be promoted as a revenue-earner for the country.

Also present at the prize-presentation ceremony were Dayang Hajah Hasnah binti Ibrahim, Director of Fisheries, Dalplus Technologies Manager Alfred Yong and officers from the Fisheries Department.
