Four-day Fisheries Carnival Sees Deals
Worth $125,000
MUARA, 03 February 2008,
Sunday - Business transactions worth $125,000 were done during the
four-day Fisheries Carnival 2008 which concluded yesterday afternoon.
Considered as the most
successful carnival to date, this year's four-day carnival received
25,000 visitors, which is a significant increase to the last carnival
held in 2006. The carnival's main objective was to increase the sales
from the activities and produces of local companies and government
agencies which participated in the event.
Officiating at the
carnival's closing ceremony was Hjh Hasnah Ibrahim, Director of the
Fisheries Department at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.
Also present were Hj Abdul Halidi Mohd Salleh, deputy director of
fisheries and officers and staff of the department.
In her speech, Hjh Hasnah
assured of the determined efforts by the Department of Fisheries to
increase the performance of future carnivals and that the department was
open to any ideas and suggestions from the public in making future
carnivals more festive and successful.
The ceremony was held at
the carnival venue at the Muara Fish Landing Complex where more than 70
local entrepreneurs involved in the fisheries industry, particularly the
capture, aquaculture and down stream industry especially seafood
processing, as well as from fisheries support services, were among the
participants.
The closing ceremony also
saw, the guest of honour presenting certificates of appreciation and
prizes to all the participants and winners of the various activities
organised during the carnival.
The carnival was blessed
this year with good weather and sea conditions which allowed the sale of
fresh fishes to go on uninterrupted for the duration of the four days,
said Khairul Azman Hj Tamin, a representative of the participants from
Syarikat Marimin dan Anak-Anak.
Majority of the visitors
said their main reason for visiting to the carnival was for the fresh
fish. The cheap prices at the carnival was one to take advantage of,
with $5 per kg for red snapper and the same for kurisi bali, which would
have been $12 per kg elsewhere.
Management assistant at H.Z.
Azam Enterprise, Hj Zaini Mohd Zain, said that the most popular fish
sold was the local mackerel, or ikan tenggiri, which, was sold-' at $5
per kg, as opposed to $8 per kg at the Gadong fish market, where they
usually sell.
Hj Zaini further said that
their sale of fresh fish had been very good throughout the carnival and
that they sold nine tonnes of fish in four days.
