Fishing for Biggest Catch at Tungku Beach
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 09
November 2008,
Sunday - More than 200 local fishing enthusiasts headed out to Tungku
Beach early yesterday morning to secure the best fishing spots as they
took part in the sixth "Cabaran Pancing" (fishing challenge)
competition.
The Brunei International
Sportfishing 2008 event was organized by the Fisheries Department of the
Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) and Captain Fred
Fishing and Marine Supply following the successful outcome of the first
sportfishing event in 2001.
The competition is aimed at
promoting sportfishing as a recreational activity and to develop the
marine eco-tourism industry through sports fishing activities which
could become potential income generator.
This year's competition is
divided into four categories: Fastest Catch, Team, Individual and
Casting Accuracy.
Ruzaini Hj Abd Rahman, one
of the enthusiasts who came with three other friends to participate in
the team and individual categories this year, said that the event is a
welcoming addition to Brunei's outdoor activities as it gives families
an opportunity to spend quality time together while enjoying and
experiencing the sights in Brunei.
Being a first-timer to such
event, Ruzaini said that it was an exciting experience to compete
against the other anglers.
"Fishing is a relaxing
hobby and to compete in something that we enjoy doing is even more of an
added advantage for us," said Ruzaini.
Khalid Hj Mahit, also a
member of Fish War team together with Ruzaini, said that the event was a
great opportunity for people to take part in local recreational
activities and enjoy the sights and surroundings available in the
country which not many are aware of. "We go fishing every chance we get
and with every outing we try and go, to places that we have never been
before," said Khalid.
The official opening for
the competition yesterday was attended by Deputy Minister of Industry
and Primary Resources Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah Hj Abd Wahab and several
senior officials from the ministry and Fisheries Department, District
Office as well as heads of villages.
Also part of the event
yesterday were several other family oriented activities such as horse
hack riding, parasailing and banana boat rides to keep family and
friends, who came to support the fishing enthusiasts in their efforts to
claim the prizes that were up for grabs, occupied.
