
Anglers Battle for Catch of the Day

Sunday - The Brunei International Sports Fishing 2008 or `Capt Fred
Fishing and Marine Supply Cabaran Pancing' at Tungku Beach was well
received yesterday, drawing the participation of 250 anglers.
In her opening remarks,
Fisheries Director Hajah Hasnah binti Ibrahim said, "In 2004, the
Department of Fisheries launched the issuance of license for sports
fishing, particularly for 'Area Distance Off the Beach' (which is three
nautical miles from the beaches).
"The issuing of sports
fishing licenses is growing annually and it has this year reached 200
licenses.
"This shows that the sector
has taken off and is attracting the interest of members of the public as
a popular recreational activity," she said.
Hajah Hasnah also expressed hopes that more
companies and the private sector will be involved in promoting the
activity and contributing to the development and progress of the
fisheries eco-tourism sector in the country.
Speaking of the fishing
challenge, she said, "This is an annual activity organized by the
Department of Fisheries, attracting parties who are interested in
developing fishing as a sport in the country.
The challenge was held to
promote fisheries eco-tourism as a potential activity to develop,
promote the sport of fishing as a beneficial recreational activity, and
encourage members of the public to gain more income from the fisheries
eco-tourism sector, namely sports fishing.
The opening ceremony was
officiated by Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources cum
guest of honor Dato Paduka Awg Haji Hamdillah bin Hj Abdul Wahab.
In his speech, Date Paduka
Haji Hamdillah highlighted that everyone has a role to play in helping
to promote the fisheries eco-tourism sector in Brunei Darussalam.
Other recreational
activities lined up for the chided horseback riding, parasailing banana
boar riding and flying fish.
