New Seafood Analytical Lab Soon
MUARA, 14 January 2010,
Thursday - The Department of Fisheries is in the process of building a
Seafood Analytical Laboratory to help realise the department's vision of
developing Brunei's seafood processing industry to a value of $71
million.
A project under the Ninth National Development Plan, the lab is expected
to be completed in 2012. The department is finalising the building's
design, which is expected to be situated near the Fish Landing Complex (FLC)
in Muara. This was announced by the Minister of Industry and Primary
Resources yesterday during a ceremony to mark the ISO/IEC 17025
accreditation of the department's existing labs at the FLC.
Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato
Paduka Hj Bakar hoped to see the new lab as a centre for seafood
handling and analysis.
"Looking at the long-term development of the seafood processing
industry, I believe that it would be beneficial if a systematic plan was
drawn up to develop this laboratory into a centre for seafood handling
and analysis, which can provide seafood analysis services not only
within the country, but also to customers abroad," he said.
"(The lab) will also provide ideal services and can compete with labs
that provide similar services in the region," he added. The minister
said that the lab should be able to function as a centre for seafood
research, whereby Universiti Brunei Darussalam can use its facilities
and cooperate with the department.
A Fisheries Department project officer said the existing labs at the FLC,
which share similar roles to the Seafood Analytical Laboratory, will be
"mobilised" to the new building once it is completed.
