Temburong New Site for Freshwater Fish and Prawn Farming Industry
TEMBURONG, 16 December, 2010,
Thursday - Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) and LiveWIRE Brunei granted the
Temburong district the opportunity to be a role model in
entrepreneurship through the $350,000 "U n I Tropika" project launched
yesterday to boost the district's economy and its freshwater fish and
prawn farm industry.
In his speech, BSP Deputy Managing Director and Chairman of LiveWIRE Hj
Zainal Abidin Hj Mohd Ali said that this project has the potential to
make Temburong a role model and a major producer of freshwater prawn and
fish in the future.
BSP has contributed $350,000 for the infrastructure development of the
prawn and fish farming ponds under this project which has been
established on a ten-hectare land in Kg Bukit Selangan.
It will be managed by local cooperative "Koperasi Bersatu Ternakan Udang
dan Ikan Tropikal Berhad" with 327 local members and trained by LiveWIRE
Brunei.
Present as the guest of honour for yesterday's event was Minister of
Industry and Primary Resources Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri
Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar.
The infrastructure for the ponds and other supporting facilities were
completed earlier this year with a total of seven ponds built including
one sediment pond, and a reservoir pond which acts as a backup water
supply to fill the other ponds.
The six ponds are allocated for freshwater prawns and one dedicated to
breeding freshwater fish.
Hj Zainal Abidin said the freshwater fish and prawn farm project called
'U n I Tropika' project, was a social investment initiative geared
towards helping develop local business opportunities in the aquaculture
sector in Brunei and at the same time, expected to bring benefits to the
residents of the Temburong District.
"If this is successful, it will achieve the BSP and the LiveWIRE Brunei
target to build a community of local entrepreneurs to further improve
their quality of life," he said.
As he ended his speech, the deputy managing director said that the BSP
and LiveWIRE Brunei felt proud to have the opportunity to work with
government and the communities in the Temburong project and hoped that
they will be able to conduct similar initiatives such as freshwater
prawn and fish project in Belait and a Entrepreneurship Scheme for
Schools in 2011.
