The Department of Fisheries, Brunei Darussalam, participated in the three-day Marine Resources Initiative (MRI) Regional Workshop, held from 26–28 August 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and hosted by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS).
The workshop brought together representatives from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Viet Nam and the Philippines, including participants from government agencies, academia, non-government organisations and regional organisations such as the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) and the Coordinating Body on the Seas of East Asia (COBSEA).
Representing Brunei Darussalam were officers from the Department of Fisheries (DOF), Reef Check Brunei (RCB) and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
The workshop focused on reviewing national priorities and co-designing the MRI Regional Workplan for 2026–2030, with emphasis on strengthening regional partnerships, coral reef research and conservation, data accessibility, technical collaboration and evidence-based decision-making for sustainable marine resource management.
The workshop also provided a valuable opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences, strengthen technical capacity, and identify areas for greater regional collaboration in supporting coral reef conservation and sustainable marine resource management.
